Flagstone Winery inspires art talent at its Rockwell Hotel Tasting Room in Cape Town!

On Wednesday I joined a number of aspirant artists at a fun Wine Jam evening at the Flagstone Tasting Room in the Rockwell Hotel in Green Point. It brought out talents in us which we did not know we had!

On Tuesday a special friend had sent me photographs of two paintings he had completed that day, and I lamented to him that I have no talents in the artistic field, despite a dutiful mother having driven my sisters and I to the PJ Olivier Art Centre in Stellenbosch every week whilst we were still at school. Had I read the email with the invitation properly I would have most likely rejected the invitation. I am so happy I went.

The invitation sent by Kirsten Hopwood of Panache Communications invited us to put on an apron and face a blank canvas, ‘unleashing your own individual creativity that makes Artjamming the most fun you can have with a paint brush’. The Flagstone Wines Wine Jam is held every last Wednesday of the month.

I arrived half an hour late, having been held up at a prior appointment. Everything had been set up, a small easel with an A3 canvas, a vast number of non-toxic acrylic paints, with brushes and other tools which we could use to express ourselves. I received a glass of Flagstone Truth Tree Pinotage 2015 on arrival. Artist Megan McNamara had set up her easel, and had prepared a painting of the Cape Town cityscape, which we were to use as inspiration for our own art work. Paper plates with different paint colours were already at my seat. I was intimidated by what my neighbour had already created, but put all inhibitions aside, and just got going, receiving encouragement from Megan. We used the backs of brushes and a cloth to create special effects in our artwork. There was an excellent camaraderie in the room. Some of the participants had decided to copy other visuals they had found on their cellphones, resulting in a divergent mix of artworks.

Every month the theme of the art work changes. The Rockwell Hotel offers a two-for-one Burger special on Wine Jam evenings, while Flagstone offers a six-wine tasting for R45.

Flagstone opened its city Tasting Room in The Rockwell late last year, and I attended an interesting wine tasting in the dark in the Rockwell Theatre in the hotel building. The Flagstone Truth Tree Pinotage 2015 has close to 15% alcohol, and was barrel fermented for 14 – 16 months. It has a bouquet of dark berries and dark chocolate, while the palate offers darker blackberry and cherry. The Flagstone Tributary Chenin Blanc 2016 received its name in making a comparison between winemaking and a river which has many tributaries influencing the resultant crafted wine. It has an alcohol content of 14%, and was fermented in stainless steel (70%) and barrel (30%). The bouquet offers fresh peach, ripe apricot, and dried pear, while the palate offers tropical fruit notes.

The Wine Jam is great fun, and is a novel event for birthdays, and corporate events. Individuals, couples, and groups of friends can book too, to discover their inner artist. The Flagstone pay-off line ‘Trust your Taste’ is well reflected in the Wine Jam event. I was very chuffed about the compliments I received for my artwork, and it will accompany my son back to the U.K. when he visits next month.
